As a Recreational Specialist, I empower people through the activities I provide. In this case, Atara and I will provide more awareness of abilities through interactive activities.
ATARA
A very socialized individual, Atara has been attending a segregated school for many years. She does not communicate through speech the way you and I do. Atara is a global communicator, using methods other than the english language to share her thoughts and her expression with the world.
I love empowering people through workshop experiences. I find that working together, we can shed awareness and ideally eliminate a lack of fear, which sadly exists and is far too common. Although we certainly visit people older than the average elementary age, working with kids who are old enough to be cognitively aware of the social issue and young enough to be playful seems ideal to me now. Inevitably Atara feels equally comfortable with younger kids and kids her age. She's most often happy when she feels others are comfortable with her.
Some schools that have very happily brought us in have been doing parallel research on disabilities in their classrooms. I find that when Atara and I make our sessions interactive, Atara is outgoing. When she is invited to participate in something that interests her, she gives more of herself.
She will exemplify that commonalities can be everywhere.
Sometimes we may have to go out our comfort zone to find more happiness.
